The feather and down trade: AT THE HEART OF MANUFACTURING

Before becoming a duvet or pillow, feathers pass through expert hands. At the Drouault factory, processing feathers and down is a rare craft, requiring precise movements, experience and knowledge passed down through generations. It is a human story, carried on for over twenty years by Bruno Carpentier.

It is still early when Bruno enters the workshop. The machines are silent, the air is controlled, almost hushed. Here, every gesture counts. Since 2002, Bruno has been one of those men behind the scenes who give down its nobility, at the heart of the factory.
Because down is not just a simple filling. It is a rare, natural material that requires equally precious expertise. In France, only a few companies still master the entire process of refining it, as well as the crafts of feather and down processing. Drouault is one of them.

Understanding the material to better enhance it

Every day, up to five tonnes of natural materials are processed in the factory. Feathers and down are sourced exclusively from ducks and geese intended for human consumption, carefully selected mainly from farms in western France. This proximity guarantees quality, traceability and consistency.
But before any processing can take place, it is essential to understand the material. Down varies according to its origin, the season and the farm. No two batches are ever completely identical. This is where experience comes into play.

“I work on the Trialo, a machine that sorts good and bad feathers before washing. This avoids unnecessary processing of those that will not be used.”

This initial sorting is crucial. It determines everything that follows. Bruno knows this, as do all the operators in the workshop, who are versatile and trained to intervene at several stages of the process.

Precision expertise, down to the millimetre

After sorting comes washing and dust removal. These steps are essential for preserving the softness, loft and natural properties of the down, while preventing allergies. Too much stress damages the material. Too little, and it loses its purity. It’s all about balance.
Then comes the most delicate stage: fine sorting. Separating the down, feathers and different parts of the feather requires meticulous adjustment of the machines and constant vigilance. This precision work directly determines the lightness, durability and performance of the finished product.
Here, some machines still use wooden forks, chosen to avoid static electricity. The temperature and humidity of the air are constantly monitored. Nothing is left to chance.

Assemble, check, guarantee

The assembly of feathers and down is another key step. The recipes are precisely adjusted to guarantee consistent quality, season after season. Each blend is designed to meet a specific use, comfort level or requirement.
At each stage of the process, Drouault’s in-house laboratory carries out daily checks on fill power, moisture resistance and overall performance. All data is recorded, ensuring complete traceability for each product.

Expertise that is passed on, day after day

There is no school for down. At the factory, expertise is passed on in the workplace, through observation, repetition of movements and guidance.
Thanks to my seniority, I can also train new recruits. I have a versatile role and am involved in different stages of the process.
This transmission of knowledge is essential. It guarantees the continuity of a rare profession and the sustainability of a quality that tolerates no compromise.

Staying, out of passion and respect for the work

While machines are essential, nothing can replace human beings. Down processing is above all a team effort
. “We work in pairs, each of us on our own machine but side by side, helping each other out.”
Bruno joined Drouault almost by chance. He never imagined he would spend more than twenty years there.
The atmosphere and solidarity made me want to stay. To stay in a company, you have to love what you do and respect your work. When you arrive in a good mood, the day goes well.” Simple,
sincere words that perfectly sum up the spirit of the factory.

Between craftsmanship and industry, for over 175 years

For over 175 years, Drouault has cultivated a subtle balance between traditional craftsmanship and industrial expertise. Duvets, pillows, mattress toppers and bedding accessories are designed with the same high standards, from raw down to the finished product.
This complete control over the production chain also allows us to offer tailor-made, personalised products and to ensure logistical responsiveness and consistent quality throughout the year.
At Drouault, down is not just processed. It is understood, respected and magnified. Thanks to men and women like Bruno, this expertise is perpetuated, day after day.
